Harmattan is upon us!
If you live in the Northern part of Nigeria, you should know this season shouldn’t be taken for granted at all. It comes with a trailer load of harsh conditions from chapped lips, to cracked soles of feet, hair breakage, dry and scaly skin, dust and what have you. You need to fully guard yourself else you would be singing a sorry song pretty soon.
Okay it’s just beginning, so there are some preventive measures you can take to avoid the weather taking its toll on you. Here are some easy home DIY techniques you can apply and you won’t have to break the bank.
CRACKED FEET
• Always scrub the sole of your feet with a foot scrub when bathing. Using a sponge alone won’t do much.
• A good pedicure will be necessary to prep your feet for the season.
• Apply oils, could be shea butter or petroleum jelly
• Do not walk around your surrounding barefooted
• Scrub your feet every night, oil and put on socks.
CHAPPED LIPS
The simplest remedy for this is to always moisturize your lips, day and night using lip balm, gloss, or Vaseline. As a lady if you prefer matte lipsticks, I would advise you go over with a lip balm before applying your signature matte lippy.
• Use a lip scrub weekly; I make mine from sugar and honey. Another method is to use coconut oil and sugar. Scrub your lips to remove dead skin, rinse with water and apply your favourite lip balm.
HAIR BREAKAGE
This is actually inevitable for ladies this season, but you can always reduce the amount of hair loss by applying hair creams and oils regularly.
• Never leave your hair dry for a long period of time.
• Make protective hairstyles; not every hairstyle is suitable for this season such as weaves, not braids.
• Massage your scalp with your hair oil or cream every night before bed time.
DRY SKIN
If you have dry skin, body oils should be your go-to this period because ordinary body cream will dry out pretty quick and leave you looking ashy. If you can’t use oils alone, I’d suggest you mix your body cream with body oil, this will keep you looking fresh all day long.
DUSTY FEET AND SHOES
We all know how dusty and dry this season can be. My sincere advice to anyone who doesn’t own a car yet, has to walk certain distances to get to their destination, or those who just love to take a walk is, ‘do not leave your house without a handkerchief, not white, I repeat not white’.
All you need do is wipe your shoes clean periodically while you walk, and mind you the way you walk matters. Personally I do not like flip-flops or sandals, because I do not know how to walk properly in them; that doesn’t mean I do not own a pair or two though. If you’re the type that can’t walk without shovelling some dust and sand, you should try walking gently by raising your feet higher than you normally would, rather than drag them. It would certainly help to reduce the amount of dirt you pack on.
