All I truly know about racism is what I have seen in movies like The Help, Twelve Years a Slave or have heard about in Roots (never watched it) and I tell you it is really heartbreaking to see what blacks went through. The stories from books and television seem so far away though my brain does register it is all real. It has never happened to me before. I have never walked down the street and have people gawk at me because I have dark skin. I have never had my rights denied because I have wooly hair. I have never been mistreated because a paper bag is shades brighter than my skin colour. So racism is something that happens somewhere to a bunch of people because another bunch of people needed slaves and transported them across the ocean, right? Wrong!
I have seen a Lebanese guy get better service because of his skin colour and guess what, he is not even white! I have seen people stare unabashedly at a white person who walks into a room predominantly filled with blacks. I have gone to the market and been told by the sales guy to buy a particular shoe because it is foreign, and by foreign, he means it is manufactured by whites.
So, what is racism?
I don’t think it is only about what they have done to us anymore. Rather it is about what we have done to ourselves. By Angieinspired
