jamun – Zino Scroll https://zinoscroll.com.ng Unrolling the truth...   If you don’t know Didam Jonah (Jaymun) is a passionate gospel rap artist whose all about promoting love, hope and truth through his music.
The artist told us about some of his challenges as a rapper in Kaduna, about his personal life and many  more.
Thank you so much for doing this interview with us,  please tell us about yourself, and your background.
My name is Didam Jonah Duniya, Native of Kaduna state and Atyap by tribe. A rapper, music composer, song writer and award winning artiste.

why gospel and not rnb or soul music?

The Gospel means the truth, so yeah I make music about the truth. The truth in love, the truth in hope, the truth in faith and the truth in life. Music is different things to different people but to me it’s a reflection of who I am, the stories life gives me.

How long have you been doing music, and how did you get started in the first place?

Officially 2013 was the year I really started music so that makes it 5 years now. Well I got to love rap music when I listened to Lecrae’s Rehab album and coincidentaly it was the album that got me totally saved as a Christian. So one day I was praying and I told God, I need the grace you’ve given Lecrae and I did not only get the grace, I also got the gift of rap.

Tell us about your “ire” remix

So I heard this song titled Ire by Adekunle Gold and I fell in love with it. He dropped the instrumental on twitter and I was like hey, why not jump on it and tell people your own Ire Story. My ire story is basically me talking to myself. If you listen you can hear the series of advice contained in the song. It’s one of the most honest song’s I’ve written.

how does your work comment on current social media or political issues?

Like I said I’m about the truth. So I try to make music that can reflect that truth. Some artistes will take money and make songs for politicians while the masses are suffering but not me. You don’t expect me to endorse this government with all that has happened and is happening. I have a conscience and beyond the music I am a human being who cares about people. As an artiste I’ve been given a platform to speak to people and I vow to always say the truth be it with the mic in my hand or my tweets and posts.

how do you get people to take you seriously as a musician?

It depends on how you carry yourself to be honest. Also at the same time lots of people think music is not a serious career cause you know its just beats and words but it’s way beyond that for me. Music is a portal to the mind. Music can shape our emotions and reasoning so as an artiste if you want people to take you seriously, take your music seriously.

who are some of your favorite composers, musicians and bands from the past and present?

Now let me point you guys to mad creative artistes I know from Nigeria, Go look for Mon Lee, Eazy Bob Wizzy, Shime Ahua, Menxee, Kheengz. There is a wave of “new school” acts sweeping across Nigeria presently talking about the likes of Johnny Drille, Ric Hassani, Efe Oraka, Nonso Amadi etc. They are not just good composers but also good aristes.

What is the biggest crowd you have performed in front of and where?

Truth is I’ve been on a lot of stages in my little time doing music. If I’m not mistaken I’ve held the mic close to 200 to 300 times so far. Maybe Alheri Camp during LXG’s vigil, Enough Is Enough campaign before the 2015 elections also Church In The Park by Living faith foundation last year. An average of 500 to 800 people

Who were the first influences on your music and style?

I listen to a lot of people, I love good music and music that speaks so I have a wide catalog of people I like. In terms of artiste who have helped shape who I am right now it’d be Lecrae, Da Truth and Eminem.

Is there a particular song or musical passage that never fails to move you emotionally?

There is this song I wrote called “Bitter Sweet”. It’s a song about my late father and elder brother. While writing the song I cried so much that I thought I wouldn’t be able to complete it. So maybe one day when the time is right I’ll share it with you guys.

If you could be invisible for a day, what would you get up to ?

This one is strong. Let’s just say the lives of people will change. I might be Santa for a day granting people their desires  as long as it’s something good.

which emotion more than the other, currently dominates your music? Joy, sadness, anger or passion and why?

Well music is a collection of all those emotions and more. Just like you need a specific ingredient to make a specific meal so also you need a specific emotion to make a specific kind of song. But in all you do and create the passion has to be there always.

Do you think the advent of Internet and all the new technology that helped your music and independent musicians in general, or do you think it just creates a mass of mediocre “copy cat” who flood the Web making it different to distinguish yourself?

Everything has it’s pros and cons. It also depends on how well you decide to use it. The internet has made it easy for people to share their art and get feedback unlike ten years ago when you have to depend on certain people to “blow”. Also it has created  a medium that helps the bad eggs spread their yokes on innocent souls which is sad if I must say. As an artiste it is my deliberate and conscious decision to be a positive voice and a light in the dark whenever I create or share my works and the internet helps me reach more people everyday.

if you could choose to work with some of today’s established artist or producers to move your game to the top with whom would you like to collaborate?

They are enormous , the list is longer than the anaconda snake. I would definitely love to work with Pharrel, Lecrae, Daramola, Cobhams, Sarz, Cassper Nyovest, MI Abaga, Asa, Brymo, Frank Edwards, Nosa and Natheiel Bassey.

What are you most afraid of?🙈

Not really afraid of anything but I’ll feel bad if I don’t give out everything I have before I leave this earth. I want to die fulfilled.

Is Jay mun single or in a relationship?

Wait….your options are wrong, it’s either Single, Married, Divorced or widowed. So based on what I’ve stated I am single. (Wink)

can you describe yourself in 3 words

God, Love, Impact

Who were you, or would be nervous to meet?

I hoenstly don’t know how I’d react if I meet a celebrity I like. Maybe when the time comes we’ll find out.

how would you describe your perfect day?

Cool day, Fuel in the gen ( cause you know we are in Nigeria and one cannot trust NEPA), Studio with my producer, food and drinks and few of my favorite people around.

in your experience thus far, what is the best piece of advice in this business you actually followed, and one you didn’t follow but now know for sure that you should have?

My mentor and spiritual father Coachie once told me to always practice. See he is a dancer and I am a rapper and it makes no sense for a dancer to mentor or teach a rapper right ? But God works in mysterious ways. I learned a lot about practice, dedication and commitment watching him teach my brothers and sisters in Compass dance. He thought me to never be above learning no matter the height I reach and to always desire to know more about what I do.
A friend once told me to learn music production but I didn’t listen and I’ve seen it slow me down a bit as an artiste. Well I’m learning now in the International University Of YouTube and Google.

what in your opinion is the biggest barrier an artist like yourself has to face and overcome to gain any commercial success. Especially in your city?

The first barrier to overcome as an artiste is that of doubt. Once you believe in God and yourself there is not height you can’t reach. You need to be dedicated and passionate as you keep moving and learn the ropes around the industry cause mehn the industry is filled with sharks who can smell blood, always read to feed on you. You have to trust God and also get someone who has been there and understands the way things work to help out.

In closing tell us something about any projects and ideas you have in store or are already working on?

This year we are going to drop more songs than we did. I plan on dropped an EP but nothing is confirmed yet and I will be dropping my first official single of 2018 titled Confessions sometime in May. It’s a song for those who have been / are depressed.
Thank you Zino for having me and wish you the very best.
